Ceramics Course | Berwick-Upon-Tweed

Introduction to Ceramics Practice
October-November
Adult Weekly Classes
6 week course

£250

Explore the possibilities of clay in our new studio. Step through the fundamentals of forming clay into 3D space using coil and slab hand techniques. Then on to the dynamic process of wheel throwing and trimming.

This course is designed for those completely new to the steps of the clay process. Forming a great introduction to those with little or no clay experience. Enjoy a period of studio practice creating personal objects you have known through every stage of their making.

Return to the studio weekly to move your creativity forward. Responding to emerging creative opportunities that evolve with every week. The clay could have reached another stage of drying, or a firing may have happened, allowing for a new unfolding of the process. A process which structures the passage of time through its continually changing nature.

Core techniques

  • Experience the stages of wheel throwing

  • Trimming the bases of pots

  • Hand building with coil and slab methods

  • Understanding clay drying and shrinkage

  • Joining sections of clay

  • Applying glaze to fired clay and decoration

Who you'll learn with:

James has introduced ceramics to others for almost ten years now, from starting out studying for a BA in Fine Art followed by an MA in Ceramics.

James lived in Hong Kong where he began learning deepening his knowledge of ceramics and subsequently taught the subject. Being surrounded by elegant Asian forms contributed to his aesthetic sense and approach to wheel thrown ceramics.

James' Edinburgh-based ceramics studio was established several years ago where he has since become well known for highly-regarded ceramics workshops, sharing these with hundreds of learners from all levels of clay experience. Sharing knowledge of wheel throwing, hand-building and glazing for enjoyable and fulfilling experiences of the craft.

This new studio location has become possible with the recent completion of the new 'Old Brewery Artist Studios' of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Join us here.
