Intermediate Wheel Throwing and Glazing
November-December
Adult Weekly Classes
6 week course

£250

This six week course includes a range of opportunities to advance fundamental wheel throwing skills you have developed. Being intended for those familiar with throwing with the ability to consistently form cylinders.

Using the cylinder as our starting point to look forward and create more challenging wheel thrown forms. We consider the physical sequences of shapes required to bring about intricate designs.

You might spend a little time to address any reoccurring issues in your process which might be blocking your progress. Then spend time to refine your process and open up a wider diversity of scales and forms.

You will have the opportunity to create glaze tests by layering specific glaze combination. Test tiles that will provide knowledge of glaze behaviours and inform your own approaches to glazed surface decoration.

With group sizes of up to four there is good opportunity for one-to-one focus on specific aspects of process.

Other specific techniques which are covered are pulling handles, forming pouring lips and creating lids and galleries.

James has introduced ceramics to others for almost ten years now, from starting out studying for a BA in Fine Art followed by an MA in Ceramics.

James lived in Hong Kong where he began learning deepening his knowledge of ceramics and subsequently taught the subject. Being surrounded by elegant Asian forms contributed to his aesthetic sense and approach to wheel thrown ceramics.

James' Edinburgh-based ceramics studio was established several years ago where he has since become well known for highly-regarded ceramics workshops, sharing these with hundreds of learners from all levels of clay experience. Sharing knowledge of wheel throwing, hand-building and glazing for enjoyable and fulfilling experiences of the craft.

This new studio location has become possible with the recent completion of the new 'Old Brewery Artist Studios' of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Join us here.
