Wheel trimming

Below are details on the stages of wheel trimming.

This is done when the clay is half dry, at the so called 'leather hard' stage.

Centring

The piece has been left to air-dry for around two to three days. It is now leather hard and ready for the foot to be trimmed. Firstly it is centred on the wheel and held in position with three pieces of clay.

Trimming

The side of the piece is trimmed forming the foot ring and refining the overall shape of the piece. This stage refines the final character of the piece. Building on decisions made during wheel throwing .

Inner foot ring

The finished thickness and shape of the foot ring is defined at this stage. Long ribbons are formed and collect as the clay is trimmed.

Final thickness

The thickness of the clay left in the base can be felt in the weight of the final fired piece. So its worthwhile spending some time checking.

Double Taster Workshops

With the clay half dried since wheel throwing the Double Taster workshop extends upon the possibilities of the single Taster. Opening up other processes including wheel trimming. New learners often cite this process is their favourite. Once complete the leather hard stage gives further creative opportunities such as carving surface texture and other clay slip decoration.
